Part 1 Install & Update

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you worked on. And for professional users, it allows to fix some registry inconsistencies and extended reports. This wonderful program has many features, and is great at keeping spyware out of the systems.

Download Spybot Search & Destroy from The home of Spybot-S&D!

Double click the downloaded spybot s&d setup file, you will be presented with the language setup screen. please select the language to use during the installation from drop down box and click "Ok".

The usual software installation screen will open, Click "Next" after closing all other running programs.



In the next screen, read the license agreement and in your agreement of the same click on the "I accept the agreement" radio button and then click "Next"



Choose a different folder for installation by clicking the "Browse" button or if you prefer the default location click on "Next".



The next screen lets you select the optional components to install along with the main program files. Make your selection and click "Next".



The next screen provides options to place the program's shortcuts. Change or Leave the default option and click "Next".



The next screen provides some more short cut options and an option to select permanent protection for Internet Explorer using SD helper and for System settings using "Tea Timer".

What is SD Helper?

This is a second layer of protection for IE. While the Permanent Immunity blocks installers by their ActiveX ID, the SD Helper installs a IE browser helper object which blocks download of files known as malicious (spyware installers for example). You can view a log of blocked installers in the Tools / Resident section in the advanced mode.

What is Tea Timer?

The Resident TeaTimer is a new tool of Spybot-S&D which perpetually monitors the processes called/initiated. It immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them giving you some options how to deal with this process in the future: You can set TeaTimer to:

* be informed, when the process tries to start again
* automatically kill the process
* or generally allow the process to run There is also an option to delete the file associated with this process.

In addition, TeaTimer detects, when something wants to change some critical registry keys. TeaTimer can protect you against such changes again giving you an option: You can either "Allow" or "Deny" the change.

The permanent protection settings may also be changed from the program settings screen after installation. I usually have only IE protection is enabled at this point as Tea Timer is likely to affect the cleaning process, in the later stages. It can be enabled later.
